Scope & Objectives
Our team was responsible for scanning and developing isometric illustrations of the piping layout within YPF’s Reformer and Furnace units. We used high-precision laser scanning technology to map the existing piping in order to replace 108 valves, primarily 1.5 inches in diameter, in the primary reformer during the scheduled shutdown period. Our deliverable was to provide extremely accurate 3D models of the piping arrangement to support the valve replacement efforts during the turnaround maintenance outage.
The Challenge
The area experiences extreme high temperatures, consequently hindering efficient acquisition of data. The industrial furnace reaching temperatures surpassing 55 degrees Celsius meant slower scan rates. The key was to manage this with a safety plan that mitigated risks to equipment failure & surveyor safety.
Our Solution
In the challenging realm of night shift operations, we recognised the paramount importance of regular breaks every 3-4 scans, strategic personnel rotation, and assiduous internal temperature monitoring, to ensure the RTC 360 scanner delivers optimal performance times.
The Results
Confronting challenging conditions, our comprehensive risk analysis and meticulous safety planning culminated in delivering quality results. We were able to provide safe, efficient service for our client, exemplifying our commitment to excellence and secure operations.
Some key results:

– General Layout Sketch PDF of Point Cloud Segments Map for E57 files.
– HDR Panoramic Imagery in Jetstream Viewer LGS.
– DGN 3D CAD and 3D PDF file of Modelled Solids.
– PDF Flange inclination and bolt hole orientation table.
– Dimensioned RLM plans
